Many African pastoral communities lived in regions where rainfall was low, irregular, or unevenly distributed. In such environments, regular crop farming can fail when crops do not receive enough water or when the growing season is short. Herd animals can be moved to places where pasture and water are temporarily available. Mobility therefore helps pastoralists use scattered resources across a large dry landscape, although it also involves risk and hard work.
