Why was it difficult to apply the ideals of the French Revolution to colonies?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Because colonial profits depended on slave labour

The French Revolution proclaimed liberty and equality, but colonial economies were organised around plantations producing valuable goods. Enslaved labour made production cheaper and helped plantation owners, merchants, and trading networks earn large profits. Applying revolutionary ideals to the colonies would therefore threaten established economic interests, not merely change a political slogan. This conflict between universal rights and material profit made abolition difficult.

The colonies did contain enslaved people, so choice B reverses the historical situation. Traders and plantation owners were not all supporters of abolition, making choice C incorrect. Choice D is also wrong: Napoleon restored slavery in French colonies in 1802, whereas the abolition associated with the revolutionary government occurred in 1794. Thus choice A correctly identifies the economic dependence on slave labour.
