Why is slave labour on plantations called unfree labour?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Because enslaved people were compelled to work against their will

Unfree labour means that a person cannot freely choose whether to work, for whom to work, or under what conditions. Enslaved people on plantations were legally treated as property, coerced into exhausting work and denied wages, mobility and meaningful consent. Therefore option A is correct. Equal wages, elections and free trade describe freedoms that enslaved people did not possess, so options B, C and D are incompatible with the historical meaning of slavery.
