Why did the conservative leaders' belief that they could control Hitler prove dangerous?

Conservative elites believed that appointing Hitler to office would allow them to use his popularity while restraining his radical programme. After becoming Chancellor in January 1933, however, Hitler used emergency powers, repression, propaganda, and legal changes to destroy opposition and weaken constitutional safeguards.
