Why can the image of a strong leader become popular in a democratic crisis?

Economic hardship, unemployment, political violence, and repeated governmental failure can make democratic institutions appear unable to solve urgent problems. In such circumstances, a leader who promises quick decisions, national unity, security, and restoration of order may seem more attractive than slow coalition negotiations. Propaganda can intensify this appeal by presenting the leader as personally decisive and by blaming opponents for every difficulty. This popularity does not prove that authoritarian leadership will solve the crisis; it explains why people may accept limits on debate and checks on power.
