The meeting of the Estates General and the debates at Versailles were important political developments, but they mainly involved representatives and formal institutions. The storming of the Bastille in Paris on 14 July 1789 demonstrated the direct intervention of ordinary people in revolutionary events. Crowds searched for arms and gunpowder, attacked a royal fortress-prison and forced its surrender. This street action showed that the Revolution was not confined to speeches, procedures or decisions made by deputies. It also encouraged popular movements in other places and became a powerful symbol of the collapse of arbitrary royal authority. Option A is therefore correct.
