What was the most balanced reason for limited open discussion on slavery?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: The profitable slave trade weakened moral criticism

The governing concept is the influence of material interests on public and political debate. Slavery was profitable for merchants, shipowners, plantation owners and colonial investors, so influential groups had strong reasons to defend it, minimize its violence or keep criticism away from decision-making. This did not mean that opposition was absent: enslaved people resisted, abolitionists argued for liberty, and revolutionary principles exposed the contradiction. Option A is balanced because it explains why discussion could be restricted or weakened without claiming that nobody criticized slavery. B, C and D are factually or logically false and do not explain the limited debate.
