What was the main difference between the Legislative Assembly and the National Convention?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Legislative Assembly was under constitutional monarchy and Convention declared republic

The Legislative Assembly operated under the constitutional monarchy established by the Constitution of 1791. It still recognised the king, although royal authority was limited by law. After the monarchy was overthrown in August 1792, the National Convention was elected and met in a new political situation. On 21 September 1792 it abolished the monarchy and declared France a republic. Therefore option A correctly states the principal difference. Option B reverses important facts: the Convention, not the Legislative Assembly, tried and executed Louis XVI, while the 1791 Constitution belonged to the earlier constitutional system.
