Unequal pressure and resentment in the Third Estate

Tax exemptions gave privileged groups an advantage because they were protected from many financial burdens. These two conditions worked together: the privileged appeared to enjoy benefits while the Third Estate carried more of the burden and struggled to buy necessities. This unequal situation produced anger and weakened support for the Old Regime.
