What inconsistency existed between the economic role and political position of the Third Estate in France?

The governing concept is the mismatch between social contribution and political power. The Third Estate contained most of France’s population and included peasants, artisans, workers, merchants, and professionals. Its members produced goods, performed labour, paid direct and indirect taxes, and often met feudal obligations. Nevertheless, the privileged estates possessed greater status, exemptions, and access to political influence.
