What did the spirit of French volunteers in the war against Austria and Prussia show?
Answer and explanation
French volunteers joined the war to defend the Revolution and the nation, not to serve a king or a feudal class. This reflected revolutionary nationalism, in which citizens saw themselves as defenders of the nation. Personal loyalty to the king was associated with monarchy, so option A is incorrect. Exam tip: Connect popular participation in defending France during the Revolution with the rise of nationalism.
