What is the correct reason for the formation of a rain shadow area?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Mountains block moist winds and the other side gets less rain

A rain shadow forms when a mountain range interrupts the movement of moist air. The air is forced to rise on the windward side, where it cools and may produce clouds and rainfall. After crossing the ridge, the air descends on the leeward side, becoming warmer and relatively drier. Consequently, the sheltered side often receives much less rain and is called a rain-shadow region.

Option B correctly identifies mountains blocking moist winds and reduced rainfall on the opposite side. The effect is caused by relief and the rising and descending movement of air, not by sea waves climbing mountains, a complete change in latitude, or air pressure becoming zero. Rainfall is therefore often unequal on the two sides of a mountain barrier.
