If housing is costly but the employment centre is dense, how can the spread of population density change?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: People may settle in cheaper nearby areas and increase outer density

Direct answer: Option A is correct. Employment centres attract people because jobs are concentrated there, but expensive housing can make living in the centre difficult. Some workers may therefore settle in nearby, cheaper areas and travel to the employment centre. As more people move into these surrounding areas, the outer or suburban density can rise, while the central area may remain highly dense in jobs and activity. Option A correctly explains this change in the spatial pattern of density. Option B is too absolute: not everyone will leave the centre, because some people can afford or prefer central housing. Option C is wrong because housing cost can strongly influence where people live and therefore affects density patterns. Option D is wrong because density will not automatically become zero. The useful idea is suburbanisation or growth of the urban fringe caused partly by housing prices. Remember: costly centre, cheaper nearby areas, more outer density.
