How can an area have high growth rate but low absolute growth?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: If its initial population is very small

Direct answer: A is correct. Growth rate is usually expressed as a percentage relative to the starting population, while absolute growth is the actual number added. A small population can therefore show a high percentage even when only a small number of people are added. For example, an increase from 100 to 110 adds only 10 people but represents 10 percent growth. A much larger place may add hundreds of people but show a lower percentage because its starting base is large. B is wrong because a very large population is more likely to have high absolute additions, although its percentage may be lower. C is wrong because no change means zero growth rate and zero absolute growth. D is wrong because a change in land area does not by itself determine the number of people added. Memory cue: percentage depends on the base; absolute growth counts the actual addition.
