In population density, density is defined as \(\frac{\text{population}}{\text{area}}\) (in persons per square kilometre). If both the population and the area of a region are doubled, what happens to its population density?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: It remains the same.

Population density \(D=\frac{P}{A}\). If \(P\to 2P\) and \(A\to 2A\), then \(D' = \frac{2P}{2A} = \frac{P}{A} = D\). So the density remains the same (persons per \(\text{km}^2\)).
