How can rivers help in groundwater recharge?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Some river water can seep into the ground

The governing hydrological concept is groundwater recharge, the replenishment of underground water when surface water infiltrates through soil and permeable rock. Water flowing in a river or stored along its channel may seep downward, especially where the riverbed contains sand, gravel or other permeable sediments. Some of that infiltrated water reaches the saturated zone and adds to groundwater. The amount depends on soil, rock, vegetation, rainfall, river flow and human changes such as paving or excessive pumping. Rivers do not always send water into the sky, make all ground impermeable or produce only salt. Therefore option A is correct.
