Why does the Arabian Sea branch give heavy rainfall on the western slopes of the Western Ghats?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Moist winds strike the Western Ghats, rise, and cool

Moist monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea are forced to rise when they meet the western slopes of the Western Ghats. As the air rises, it cools; its water vapour condenses and produces heavy rainfall. This is called orographic or relief rainfall. On the opposite, leeward side, descending air is relatively dry, so rainfall is lower. Exam tip: remember that the windward slope receives more rain, while the rain-shadow slope receives less.
