the importance of human teachers

Correct answer: A. Old education had human presence

Explanation: The governing concept is the contrast between human-centred schooling and machine-based instruction. Tommy clarifies that the teacher in an old school was a man, meaning a real person who taught children in a shared classroom. This supports the view that older education included human presence, conversation, observation, and personal guidance. Hence option A is correct. Option B contradicts the picture of children attending school, while C reverses the contrast because machines dominate Margie's future system. Option D is also false: the story's old schools used printed books, including the one Tommy discovers. Tommy's wording therefore highlights the human character of traditional schooling.

Correct answer: D. Lack of human company

Explanation: The governing concept is that educational quality includes social and emotional connection, not merely the delivery of information. Margie's present system gives her a lesson at home through a machine, but it removes classmates, shared activities, and ordinary human contact. When she imagines children learning together in an old school, that companionship makes the past seem attractive. Therefore option D is correct. The story does not say that food, clothes, or holidays explain her interest in old education. Her curiosity grows from the absence of people around her during study, so the contrast is between isolated instruction and communal learning.

Correct answer: B. Need for human interaction and company

Explanation: The governing idea in “The Fun They Had” is that education is not merely the delivery of information through a device. Even when mechanical teachers and other tools change, children still need conversation, encouragement, companionship, and the experience of learning with other people. Therefore, option B is correct: human interaction and company remain important. Option A is too narrow because costly equipment is not a universal educational need. Option C is only a setting connected with the discovery of the old book, not a lasting need. Option D reduces education to speed and testing, ignoring emotional and social development. The question therefore points to the enduring human side of learning.

Correct answer: A. Efficiency versus human understanding

Explanation: The governing concept is the contrast between technological efficiency and the human qualities of teaching. A mechanical teacher can deliver lessons regularly, measure answers, and adjust work to a child’s level. However, a human teacher can notice feelings, explain patiently, respond flexibly, encourage a learner, and create a relationship with the class. Therefore option A is correct: the comparison is between efficiency and human understanding. Options B, C, and D concern unrelated physical objects or activities and do not appear as meaningful educational contrasts in the story. The author does not simply declare technology useless; instead, the comparison asks readers to recognize its advantages while also seeing that information and programmed instruction cannot fully replace empathy, companionship, and shared classroom life.

Correct answer: A. He fixes the machine's pace but not social loneliness

Explanation: The governing concept is the difference between solving a mechanical fault and solving the complete educational problem. The County Inspector discovers that Margie's Geography sector is set too fast, so he slows it to an appropriate level and temporarily removes the machine's panel. That action addresses the immediate technical difficulty, but Margie still studies alone at home with a machine and has no classmates with whom to discuss lessons, play, or share experiences. Option A is correct because it captures both sides of the situation. Option B is false because the inspector does not destroy the old book; C and D contradict the events. His solution is useful, but it cannot restore the social dimension of schooling.

Correct answer: C. Personalized learning

Explanation: The governing concept is personalized learning, in which instruction is adjusted to a learner's ability, pace, and needs. Margie's mother believes that the mechanical teacher should be set to suit Margie's mind, so the County Inspector examines the machine and changes its speed when the Geography lessons become too difficult. This is not the same as removing education or abandoning assessment; it is an attempt to make instruction appropriate for one child. Option C is correct because it names that learner-centred principle. Option A describes a uniform method, the opposite of the mother's view. B is too extreme, and D is unsupported because Margie still receives regular tests. The episode also invites readers to ask whether personalization needs human understanding.

Correct answer: D. Explanation empathy and dialogue

Explanation: The governing concept is the social and emotional role of a teacher. A human teacher can notice confusion, explain an idea in another way, respond to a child's feelings, ask questions, and create dialogue rather than merely deliver programmed lessons or record answers. In the story, the old school also places children together, so teaching becomes part of a shared human experience. Option D is correct because explanation, empathy, and dialogue describe these personal qualities. Option A concerns machine maintenance, not teaching; B belongs to commerce; and C reduces education to mechanical checking. The contrast does not mean every human teacher is perfect, but it shows that education involves relationships and understanding as well as information.

Correct answer: A. The joy of learning together

Explanation: The governing idea is that education has a lasting social value beyond the transfer or testing of information. After reading about the old schools, Margie imagines children learning together, sitting in the same room, helping one another, and enjoying the companionship of a human teacher. Her thought makes the ending gently ironic: the supposedly advanced system is convenient, yet the older system appears more joyful and socially rich. Option A is correct because it expresses the value highlighted by her imagination. B describes mechanical efficiency, not the emotional meaning of the ending. C is only a feature of Margie's arrangement, while D is a superficial feature of a device. The conclusion values shared experience without claiming that all old schooling was perfect.

Correct answer: B. Because the teacher is a machine and there are no classmates

Explanation: The governing concept is that education is a human experience involving relationships, conversation, cooperation, and emotional response, not merely the delivery of correct information. Margie receives lessons from a mechanical teacher in an isolated home setting, and she has no classmates with whom to compare answers, discuss ideas, play, or learn social habits. These two connected conditions explain why her learning feels detached from ordinary human experience. Option B is correct because it states both causes. A is false because a curriculum and lessons do exist. C is the opposite of the story's situation, since Margie has very few books, and D is unsupported: the problem is the structure of learning, not the children's inability to ask questions.

Correct answer: A. Her unfamiliarity with old collective schools

Explanation: Margie’s curiosity grows because the old printed book describes a kind of school she has never experienced. She studies alone at home with a mechanical teacher, whereas the book shows children learning together in a shared building under the guidance of a human teacher. Since this arrangement is unfamiliar to her, she asks questions and begins to imagine what such schooling might have been like. Option A therefore identifies the real cause: lack of personal experience. Her Geography difficulty may make her unhappy, but it does not create this curiosity; the other options are either unsupported or opposite to the evidence.

Correct answer: A. Margie imagines companionship, joy, and a teacher in it

Explanation: Margie idealises old education because it represents everything missing from her isolated routine. She imagines children sitting together, learning at the same time, helping one another, and being taught by a real human teacher. These details make the past seem lively, friendly, and joyful, even though the story does not claim that old schools were perfect. The romantic view therefore comes from Margie’s emotional longing for companionship and meaningful human contact. Option A expresses this combination. Options B and C deny the presence of lessons, while D reverses the contrast because machines belong to Margie’s future system.

Correct answer: A. It helps learning but does not give social experience

Explanation: Teaching at the child’s level is useful because the mechanical teacher can adjust lessons and assignments to Margie’s individual needs. This personalised arrangement may make practice more convenient and can support academic progress. However, usefulness in delivering content does not mean completeness of education. Margie still lacks classmates, conversation, cooperation, emotional encouragement, and the example of a human teacher. Option A therefore gives both the genuine benefit and the important limitation. Options B and C exaggerate the machine’s role by treating it as a total replacement, while D falsely claims that it recreates traditional schools.

Correct answer: A. Collective enjoyment versus solitary machine-based study

Explanation: Margie studies alone at home with a mechanical teacher. In her imagined old school, children learn together and share the experience of a classroom. The contrast is therefore between solitary machine-based study and the enjoyment of learning with others, making option A correct.

Correct answer: A. It can respond and adapt to learners

Explanation: A human teacher can listen to students' questions, notice when they are confused and explain an idea in a different way. The story contrasts this possibility of personal interaction with Margie's fixed, machine-led lessons. Thus, option A identifies a potential advantage of human teaching.

Correct answer: A. She studies alone with a machine and has no classmates in her lessons

Explanation: Margie studies at home with a mechanical teacher rather than in a classroom with other children. She has no classmates sharing her lessons, so she misses the interaction and companionship of a group. Option A gives the evidence for the lack of human connection.

Correct answer: A. He could explain lessons, interact with pupils, and guide them

Explanation: Option A is correct. In the old schools described in the story, a human teacher taught children together and could explain lessons and respond to them directly. A mechanical teacher delivered programmed lessons and tests to a child studying alone, so it did not provide the same kind of human interaction and guidance.

Correct answer: A. Her dull and lonely machine study

Explanation: The governing idea is that the story compares efficient technological education with the social and emotional richness of traditional schooling. Margie studies alone with a mechanical teacher, follows an individual schedule, and receives lessons through a screen. This routine makes learning feel dull and isolated. When Tommy shows her a real printed book, she begins imagining children learning together in an old-fashioned school. Therefore, the imagined joy is a reaction to the loneliness and monotony of her machine-based education, making option A correct. Option B is opposite to the situation, while options C and D do not explain her desire for an old school.

Correct answer: A. Classroom community

Explanation: The governing concept is the classroom as a shared social institution rather than a private learning device. In the old schools remembered by Tommy and imagined by Margie, one human teacher taught a group of children in the same physical room. The pupils could meet, respond to the teacher, and experience learning as a collective activity. That arrangement forms a classroom community, so option A is correct. A private machine corner describes Margie's individual lessons, not the old system. The attic is merely the place where the book is found, and a telebook repair centre has no role in the educational structure described in the story.

Correct answer: A. Joy and relationship in learning

Explanation: The governing concept is the emotional dimension of learning. The mechanical teacher can deliver information and mark answers, but it cannot create the warmth, encouragement, understanding, and mutual relationship that a human teacher and classmates can provide. Margie's boredom shows that instruction may continue while the pleasure of learning declines. Thus the affected outcome is the joy of learning and the learner's sense of relationship with others, making option A correct. The number of answers is a mechanical or numerical matter, not an emotional result. Page colour and attic cleaning are physical details unrelated to educational quality. The story therefore distinguishes transmission of lessons from meaningful learning.

Correct answer: A. Human dialogue and presence of classmates

Explanation: The governing concept is that education becomes lively through interaction, not merely through the delivery of correct information. In the old schools, children were physically present together, listened to a human teacher, responded to questions, and could share reactions with classmates. Such dialogue created curiosity, companionship, and a sense of participation. Therefore option A correctly identifies human conversation and the presence of classmates as the source of liveliness. Inserting answers into a machine may show efficiency but offers no social exchange. Screen light is only a technical feature, and machine repair supports the system without improving the human experience of learning. The contrast is central to the story.

Correct answer: A. Because it gave the experience of learning together with a human teacher

Explanation: The old school appears ideal not because it was free from study, but because it combined learning with human and social experience. Children met one another, learned in the same place, responded to a teacher and shared ordinary activities. Margie, who studies alone with a mechanical teacher, imagines that this community would make education more enjoyable and meaningful. Option A is therefore correct. Options B and D contradict the description, while option C reverses the contrast: machines dominate Margie's future education, whereas the old school depends on people. The story presents this ideal through Margie's hopeful imagination, not as a claim that every old school was perfect.

Correct answer: A. Empathetic guidance and question-answer interaction

Explanation: The story distinguishes mechanical instruction from the richer experience provided by a human teacher. Margie’s mechanical teacher can display lessons, ask questions and record results, but it cannot understand her mood, encourage her personally or respond flexibly to the reasons behind her difficulties. A human teacher can explain an idea in another way, notice confusion, answer follow-up questions and create a sense of companionship in learning. Thus option A is correct because the missing element is empathetic guidance and genuine question-answer interaction. The shape of punch code, the size of the telebook and the height of the attic are merely physical details; none represents the educational and emotional loss caused by the absence of a human teacher.

Correct answer: A. Human supervision is still necessary

Explanation: The governing idea is that technology can deliver instruction, but it cannot completely replace human judgment and care. Margie’s mechanical teacher develops a problem in Geography, and her mother does not simply trust the machine or leave the child to manage it alone. She calls the County Inspector, who examines the device, adjusts its Geography sector, and makes it suitable for Margie’s level. This sequence shows that a human adult must monitor, interpret, and correct an educational system. Option A is therefore correct. Option B is wrong because the machine requires repair; C contradicts the purpose of education; and D confuses the historical book with the teacher’s role.

Correct answer: A. A layer of history and distance in time

Explanation: The governing concept is imagery: a physical description can carry symbolic meaning beyond its literal appearance. The yellow, old printed book is a material object from an earlier age, and its worn condition makes the past feel distant and real. It also contrasts strongly with Margie’s smooth electronic lessons and screen-based machine. Because of the book, the reader senses that the form of education has changed across time, while the children’s curiosity about learning remains recognizable. Option A is correct because it connects colour and age with history and temporal distance. The other options mention Geography, speed, or sport, none of which is suggested by the book’s appearance.

Correct answer: A. It lacks living teacher and classmate relationships

Explanation: The governing concept is the social and emotional dimension of education. Margie receives lessons at home from a mechanical teacher, and her progress is measured through programmed tests. This arrangement may be efficient, but it gives her no ordinary classroom, no living teacher with whom she can communicate, and no classmates with whom she can share discovery or friendship. Her curiosity about the old school reveals what the modern system lacks rather than what it possesses. Option A is correct. B is false because the story mentions a printed book as a source of wonder; C is false because a machine is central to her education; and D is false because she does receive regular lessons.
