Which list shows who can vote?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: B, the voter list. The voter list, or electoral roll, is the official list of eligible voters registered in a particular constituency or polling area. Before voting, officials use it to check whether a person’s name is recorded and whether the person is entitled to vote there according to the applicable rules. A shopping list records items to buy, a railway list concerns travel information, and a school book list records educational materials; none of these has electoral authority. Therefore B is the only option connected with voting eligibility. It is useful to distinguish the voter list from an identity card: the identity document helps verify who the person is, while the voter list helps verify that the person is registered to vote in that area. Memory cue: “voter list = list of registered voters.”
