What is the function of a polling station?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: A, it is the place where voters cast their votes. A polling station is an officially designated location in a constituency where registered voters come on polling day. Election officials verify the voter’s identity and eligibility according to the applicable procedure, and the voter records a choice using the authorised voting method. The station helps organise voting safely and systematically; it is not the place where votes are finally counted. B is wrong because court proceedings take place in a court, not a polling station. C is wrong because tax collection is a government-finance activity held through other offices or systems. D is wrong because a sports ground has a different purpose. A is correct because polling means the act of voting. Memory cue: polling station means voting place; counting happens later at a designated counting centre.
