An educational diagram uses arrows of different thicknesses without explaining what thickness means. What problem does this create?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Viewers may interpret thickness as importance or quantity

The governing concept is visual encoding: a visible difference is normally interpreted as carrying information. When arrow thickness varies without a legend or explanation, viewers may reasonably infer that thicker arrows represent greater quantity, strength, importance, or flow. That unsupported inference creates ambiguity and can lead to a wrong reading of the diagram. The variation does not automatically change the text, topic, or dimensionality.
