A line graph omits several years in the middle and connects only the starting and ending points. What is the risk?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Intermediate rises and falls may be hidden

The governing concept is honest representation of trends. A line joining only the first and last available points shows the net change but not what happened between them. The omitted years could contain sharp rises, falls, reversals or periods of stability, so the shortened graph may give a misleading impression of a smooth or simple trend. The line colour, title size and axis name are not automatic consequences of missing data.
