Why is simply adding more water not always suitable for making an opaque primary colour transparent in every medium?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Each medium has different binder and surface behaviour

The governing concept is medium-specific paint behaviour. Water can dilute watercolour, but in acrylic, poster colour, oil, or other media, excessive water may disturb the binder, adhesion, drying, surface strength, or permanence. Therefore transparency must be created using the appropriate medium or thinner. Water never automatically turns a colour black, complementary, or secondary.
