Why is reflected light shown brighter than the core shadow but dimmer than the highlight?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Because it is indirect light bounced from a nearby surface

The governing concept is the hierarchy of light on a form. A highlight receives relatively direct illumination and is therefore the lightest area. Reflected light comes indirectly from a nearby surface, so it raises the value inside the shadow but normally remains weaker than the highlight. The core shadow stays darker because it is turned away from the main source. Reflected light does not necessarily alter local colour, occur only on contours, or act as a direct source.
