Why is pigment mixing called a subtractive process?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Because colours absorb parts of light

The governing concept is subtractive colour theory. A pigment does not normally add its own light; it absorbs some wavelengths from the light falling on it and reflects the remainder to the eye. When pigments are combined, more wavelengths are commonly absorbed and the reflected result becomes darker or duller. Thus option A is correct; the term does not mean that the physical quantity of paint decreases.
