Why is only memorizing types of lines not enough in line study?

Because line use in feeling, structure, texture, and focus must be understood

Studying line involves more than learning labels such as horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved, or zigzag. The governing concept is that a line is both a visual element and a means of communication. Its direction, thickness, continuity, pressure, and movement can suggest calmness, energy, distance, texture, structure, or emphasis. Thus option A is correct because understanding application allows an artist to choose a suitable line for a particular visual purpose. Option B is false because lines do have identifiable types; option C contradicts their central role in drawing; and option D confuses line study with colour study. Memorization identifies a line, but observation and practice explain what that line does.
