The governing concept is the difference between category and manner of expression. Option A is correct because type identifies a broad class, medium, or purpose—for example painting, sculpture, printmaking, or portraiture—whereas style refers to recognizable choices in line, colour, shape, technique, subject treatment, composition, and visual language. Two paintings can belong to the same type but have very different styles; conversely, a similar style can appear across more than one type or medium. B is false because style is expressed through form, C confuses type with authorship, and D is false because both concepts are important to art understanding. They are related, but they are not interchangeable.
