Why is a cast shadow darker near the point of contact with the object?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Less ambient light reaches that area

A contact shadow is darkest where the object meets the supporting surface because the object blocks direct and much of the surrounding ambient light there. As the cast shadow extends away, more indirect light can reach it and its edge often becomes softer and lighter. Thus option A is correct. Paper thickness, automatic pencil behaviour, and a change in the object’s colour are not physical causes of the tonal difference.
