Why is a cast shadow darker near the base of an object?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Less light reaches that area

The governing concept is contact-shadow behaviour. Near the base, the object blocks more of the incoming light and leaves very little room for light to enter or bounce into the contact area. Consequently, the cast shadow is usually darkest and most concentrated there, then becomes softer and lighter as it extends away. The object’s colour, paper thickness, and pencil do not automatically determine this value change; it comes from the lighting geometry.
