Why does volume appear weak in a sketch containing only middle-grey values?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: There is insufficient difference between light and shadow

The governing concept is a full tonal range for describing form. Volume becomes readable when light areas, middle values, and darker shadows have enough relative contrast to show planes turning toward or away from the light. If every area remains middle grey, the value relationships are compressed and the form loses modeling, even if the outline is accurate. Lines being long or perspective being present does not replace the needed light-shadow difference.
