Why does the contact shadow appear darker near the base of an object?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: The least light enters that area

The governing concept is occlusion in light and shade. Where an object touches the supporting surface, direct light and much reflected light are blocked, so very little illumination reaches the narrow contact area. This makes the contact shadow the darkest part and visually anchors the object. Option A is correct; a white paper area, a highlight, or the end of perspective does not explain this darkness.
