Why can the shadow on a white object be lighter than the lit side of a black object?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: The objects have different local values

Value is relative to both illumination and the material’s local value. A white object begins with a high local value, so even its shaded side may remain lighter than a black object’s illuminated side, whose local value begins much lower. This comparison disproves the idea that all shadows are white or that light simply changes colour. Paper colour is not the governing reason. Therefore option C correctly explains the result.
