Overlapping means that one shape partly covers another. This is a useful visual method for showing that one object is nearer and another is farther away. For the method to work, the viewer must be able to identify which boundary belongs to the front shape and which part is hidden behind it. If the boundaries are unclear, the eye may not understand the order of the objects or their spatial relationship.
