When does shape dominance occur in a composition?

The governing concept is dominance, a compositional quality in which one element becomes the main visual focus. Shape dominance occurs when a particular shape attracts more attention because it is larger, more strongly coloured, more isolated, more centrally placed, more detailed, or different from surrounding shapes. Option A correctly describes this process. Dominance does not require the shape to be the only object; it means that the viewer notices it first or gives it greater visual importance. Options B, C, and D remove the conditions needed for a shape to dominate and therefore cannot be correct. Other elements such as contrast, repetition, and surrounding empty space may support dominance. The artist can use it intentionally to establish hierarchy and guide the viewer’s eye through the composition.
