When does figure-ground confusion occur?

When the difference between the main shape and the background is unclear.

Figure-ground perception separates a subject, or figure, from the surrounding background, or ground. Confusion occurs when their edges, values, colours, patterns, or forms are so similar or entangled that the viewer cannot decide easily which area should be read as the main shape. Option A is correct because unclear separation weakens visual hierarchy and may cause the eye to shift between possible readings. Option B describes clarity rather than confusion. Option C provides the condition that normally improves recognition, and option D also supports a stable figure-ground relationship. Confusion can sometimes be used intentionally in art, but it still depends on an ambiguous or insufficiently clear difference between figure and ground.
