When do overlapping lines work correctly as a depth cue in a drawing?

When the front form partly covers the back form

The governing concept is overlap, one of the basic visual cues for spatial depth. When a nearer form crosses in front of and partly hides a farther form, the viewer interprets the interruption as a front-back relationship. The covered edge appears to continue behind the foreground form, so the image gains a clear sense of spatial order. Option A is correct because intentional partial covering establishes which form is nearer. Option B removes contact and therefore gives little evidence of depth. Option C denies the relationship that overlap is meant to communicate. Option D creates confusion rather than convincing space because the crossing appears accidental. The cue works best when the overlap is deliberate, readable, and supported by coherent contours.
