When a composition has both line contrast and colour contrast, how should the role of line be understood?

Line controls form, direction, and emphasis at a different level

The governing concept is the independent but cooperative role of visual elements. Colour contrast can attract attention through hue, value, or temperature, but line still defines edges, implies direction, describes movement, separates areas, and establishes emphasis through weight and placement. The two systems may reinforce one another or create productive tension; the presence of colour does not cancel line’s expressive function. Therefore option A is correct because it recognises line as controlling form, direction, and emphasis on its own level. Options B and C incorrectly treat the elements as mutually exclusive, while D reduces line to a border and ignores its structural and expressive uses.
