They are not empty or useless areas; they help an artist judge the size, direction, distance, and position of the main forms. If these spaces are ignored, an object may become too wide, too narrow, badly placed, or incorrectly related to nearby objects. Looking at both the object and its surrounding spaces improves observation and drawing accuracy.
