What is the simple meaning of shape balance in a composition?

Shape balance means arranging shapes so that the composition feels visually stable. Visual balance does not always require identical shapes on both sides. A large shape may be balanced by several smaller shapes, or a dark shape may be balanced by a lighter area. The viewer should feel that no part of the picture pulls attention so strongly that the whole composition seems to tip or become uncomfortable.
