What is the correct relationship between core shadow and reflected light on the shadow side of a form?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Reflected light is slightly lighter than the core shadow

The governing concept is the tonal structure of form shading. The core shadow is the darkest part of the turning form because it receives little direct light. Reflected light from nearby surfaces can slightly raise the value along the shadow side, so it is normally lighter than the core shadow but still much darker than the main highlight. It should not become brighter than the highlight, and the two values are not always equal.
