In art, a positive shape is the visible form occupied by an object or by filled colour, paint, shading, or pattern. It is usually the shape that the viewer identifies as the subject. The empty area surrounding or separating that form is called negative space. Positive and negative shapes work together: one shows the object, while the other defines the space around it. Filling a shape therefore makes its occupied area more visually definite.
