Negative shape means the empty area around, between, or sometimes inside the main objects in a drawing. It is not useless space. Observing it helps an artist judge whether the object has the correct size, position, outline, and proportion. The shapes of the empty areas can also guide the artist while copying or arranging a composition.

For example, if the gap between two objects is too narrow on one side and too wide on the other, the drawing may look unbalanced even when the objects seem familiar.
