What can mass mean in form?

The sense of an object being solid and heavy

In visual art, mass refers to the perceived bulk, solidity, and weight of a form. It is not limited to the scientifically measured amount of matter; in a drawing, mass is communicated through size, contour, overlapping shapes, value changes, cast shadows, and the relationship of the object to the ground or surrounding space. A dark base shadow, for example, can make an object feel more firmly placed, while carefully modelled tones can make a rounded body feel substantial. Option A is correct because it expresses the visual sense of solidity and heaviness. Options B, C, and D concern spelling, smell, or typography and do not describe the physical or perceived bulk of a form. Mass should be considered together with volume, although the two terms are not identical.
