What can be done in brush technique to create light and dark values of the same colour?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Vary the amount of water and paint

The governing concept is value, meaning the lightness or darkness of a colour. In water-based painting, adding more water or using less pigment creates a lighter, more transparent value, while using more concentrated paint creates a darker value. Therefore changing the water-to-paint ratio can produce several values of one colour. New paper, a painted handle or merely changing brushes does not change the colour value by itself.
