Lighter and less prominent than the main subject

The governing concept is hierarchy through line weight and visual emphasis. A composition usually creates focus by giving the most important subject stronger, clearer, or more noticeable lines, while background marks are softened or reduced. Option A follows this principle: lighter and less prominent background lines allow the eye to recognise the main subject first. Option B reverses the hierarchy and may pull attention away from the subject. Option C physically interferes with visibility instead of creating focus, and option D removes useful distinction by giving every area equal emphasis. Background lines need not disappear completely; they may still describe setting and space, but their visual strength should normally remain subordinate to the focal subject.
