If similar shapes are far apart but have the same colour, how can grouping form?

Similarity can partly compensate for lack of proximity

Grouping means that viewers perceive separate marks or shapes as belonging together. Proximity, or nearness, is one useful cue, but it is not the only one. Similar colour, shape, size, direction, or texture can connect elements even when they are not physically close. If several distant shapes share the same colour, the eye may read them as a related set, though the grouping may be weaker than when both similarity and proximity are present.

Choice A is correct because colour similarity can partly make up for the lack of closeness. The word “partly” is important: distance may still reduce the strength of the group, but matching colour supplies another visual connection. Grouping is therefore not impossible, and colour does have a relationship with perception. The shapes do not become invisible; instead, their shared feature can help the viewer organize them mentally.
