If a violet shadow appears too bright in a painting what is a suitable way to deepen and mute it?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: Add a little yellow and blue as needed

The governing concept is complementary neutralisation combined with value control. Yellow lies opposite violet in the traditional colour wheel, so a small amount can reduce violet’s saturation and mute its brightness. A little blue can preserve or deepen the shadow rather than making it pale. White would usually lighten the mixture, red would push it toward red-violet, and water mainly dilutes the paint. Add the complementary colour gradually because too much can make the shadow dull or brownish.
