Object observation

Correct answer: B. Realistic drawing relies more on observed appearance, while creative drawing allows more imagination and interpretation

Explanation: Realistic drawing aims to show an object close to its observed appearance, so the artist studies features such as proportion, shape, light, and shadow. Creative drawing may change, simplify, or reimagine the object through personal ideas. Both can involve observation and artistic style; the main difference is their emphasis.

Correct answer: C. By developing the habit of carefully observing colour, shape and proportion

Explanation: The governing concept is observation as a foundation of drawing and visual learning. When students study an object before drawing it, they compare its outline, size, position, colour, texture, light, and proportion. Repeated looking followed by careful recording trains the eyes to notice relationships and small differences instead of relying on a vague impression. Therefore, option C is correct. Imagination has value, but drawing without observation does not specifically strengthen accurate visual noticing. Ignoring details and working only for speed can reduce attention. Art practice improves observation when looking, comparing, and representing are connected.

Correct answer: C. It helps understand colour, shape, and arrangement carefully

Explanation: The governing concept is observation as careful visual attention. Art practice trains learners to notice colour, shape, proportion, texture, position, and the relationship between parts instead of looking at an object vaguely. In daily life this helps them read signs, compare products, recognise changes, arrange materials, understand directions, and identify important details in their surroundings. Therefore, option C is correct because it names careful understanding of colour, form, and arrangement. Option A says the opposite, option B denies the development of visual awareness, and option D confuses observation with memorisation. Observation may support memory, but it first requires attentive seeing and interpretation of what is actually present.

Correct answer: A. Sight measurement

Explanation: The governing technique is sight measurement, an observation method used in drawing. The artist holds a pencil at arm’s length, aligns it with the object, and compares apparent heights or widths to estimate relative proportions. This supports accurate construction before details are added. Colour mixing, printing and decorative line work do not measure the object’s dimensions.

Correct answer: B. To keep the measuring distance constant

Explanation: The governing concept is consistent comparative measurement. Holding the pencil at full arm’s length keeps the distance between the eye, pencil, and subject approximately fixed, so measured widths, heights, and angles can be compared reliably. Therefore option B is correct. Making the pencil appear longer, darkening a line, or straightening the paper is not the purpose. Repeatedly bending the arm would change the scale and reduce accuracy.

Correct answer: A. Gradual according to the curved surface

Explanation: The governing concept is modelling a curved form with a controlled tonal transition. Because a cone has a sloping, curved surface, light usually changes progressively across it, following the form rather than stopping at an arbitrary straight boundary. Therefore option A is correct. A sudden transition may suit a sharp edge or cast-shadow boundary, but not the general turning of the cone; no change would flatten the form.

Correct answer: B. A cube has clear plane changes while a sphere has gradual tones

Explanation: The governing concept is adapting tonal treatment to the structure of the form. A cube has separate flat planes, so changes in value can be relatively clear at each edge. A sphere has a continuously curved surface, so its values usually blend gradually from light to shadow. Thus option B is correct; the other choices wrongly deny the difference or remove essential shading.

Correct answer: A. Blending stump

Explanation: A blending stump is a paper or felt tool designed to spread graphite in a controlled way, helping adjacent tones merge into a smooth and even value. Therefore, option A is correct. A metal nail can scratch the surface, scissors cut rather than blend, and a watercolour brush is intended for wet media and is not the normal tool for dry graphite blending. Clean paper and light, gradual application still matter when using the stump.

Correct answer: B. To check proportions and angles

Explanation: This is the sighting or comparative-measurement method used in observational drawing. Holding the pencil at a fixed arm’s length creates a consistent viewing scale, allowing the artist to compare widths, heights, alignments, and angles of the object. Thus option B is correct. The pencil is not being used as a sharpener or cutting tool, and colour mixing is unrelated. Keeping the arm and viewing position steady improves the reliability of the comparison.

Correct answer: A. Highlight

Explanation: In tonal drawing, the highlight is the small area where light appears strongest on an object, so option A is correct. It may be left as clean paper or carefully lifted with an eraser when using graphite. A midtone is an intermediate value, a core shadow is a dark area on the form, and a contour describes an edge rather than brightness.

Correct answer: B. Overall arrangement and large shapes

Explanation: In observational drawing, the governing principle is to establish the whole before the parts. First inspect the group’s overall arrangement, relative height and width, spacing, overlaps, and largest shapes. This prevents the composition from drifting and provides a framework for later details. Option B is therefore correct. Starting with tiny details or only dark shadows can produce inaccurate proportions, while object names do not determine visual placement.

Correct answer: A. Depth

Explanation: Overlap is a spatial cue: when the contour of one object interrupts or covers part of another, the viewer reads the uninterrupted object as being in front. This relationship makes the arrangement appear to occupy real space and increases the sense of depth. Option A is correct. Overlap does not make a drawing flatter, automatically create disorder, or increase brightness; those effects relate to different visual decisions.

Correct answer: A. Correct placement and shape of objects

Explanation: Negative-space analysis is an observational method for checking the shapes around and between objects. If those empty shapes match the reference, the objects’ boundaries, placement, and relative proportions are more likely to be accurate. Therefore option A is correct. Studying negative space does not mix colours, alter paper thickness, or determine a pencil’s price; those choices belong to different areas of art practice.

Correct answer: A. एक भाग को मापकर दूसरे भाग से तुलना करना

Explanation: Proportion means the size relationship between parts of an object. Comparative measurement provides a practical check: choose one part as a reference unit, then compare the width, height, or other parts with it. For example, the object’s height may be estimated as several times its width. Colour, darker lines, or changing the paper cannot verify these relationships, so option A is correct.

Correct answer: B. दृष्टि को समतल करके माप अधिक स्थिर बनाना

Explanation: Sight measuring works best when the viewpoint remains consistent. Closing one eye removes the second-eye view and reduces binocular parallax, so the object and measuring pencil are seen from one fixed line of sight. Holding the pencil at the same arm’s length then makes comparisons more repeatable. It changes neither colour nor pencil size, making option B correct.

Correct answer: C. Contour study

Explanation: The governing concept is contour observation: the artist studies the outside boundary and important changes in direction within an object to understand its form before or during drawing. Therefore, option C, contour study, is correct. Colour study concerns colour relationships, stippling uses dots for tone, and collage assembles materials, so none of those describes boundary observation.

Correct answer: B. Placement and proportion of objects become more accurate

Explanation: The governing concept is negative-space observation in visual measurement. The empty shapes between and around objects provide reliable boundaries for checking gaps, angles, alignment, and relative size. Consequently, option B is correct: accurate negative shapes help correct the placement and proportion of the objects themselves. This practice does not select colours, alter pencil grade, or strengthen paper; it improves observation and construction accuracy.

Correct answer: D. An awkward tangent may be created

Explanation: The governing concept is careful placement and edge spacing in a drawing. When the contour of an object merely touches the paper boundary, the contact can create an awkward tangent: the object may appear accidentally cropped, stuck to the edge, or connected to it in an unintended way. Thus option D is correct. Such contact does not improve colour, change the object’s shape, or automatically make its shadow lighter.

Correct answer: D. One object is in front of the other

Explanation: The governing concept is overlap as a depth cue. When one object covers part of another object’s outline, the covered object is read as being behind, while the covering object is read as being in front. Therefore option D is correct. Overlap does not prove that the objects occupy exactly the same position, have equal colours, or are equal in size; it mainly communicates their front-to-back spatial order.

Correct answer: B. Metal has sharp value changes, while matte surfaces have softer transitions

Explanation: The governing concept is how a surface reflects light. Shiny metal produces strong, clearly separated highlights and dark bands, so its value changes are often abrupt. A matte object scatters light, creating broader and softer transitions between light and shade. Thus option B is correct. Equal tones ignore surface character, while the other choices make false claims about shadows or outlines.

Correct answer: A. Measure major height and width relationships with light lines

Explanation: The governing concept is construction before detail. First compare the subject’s overall height, width, axis and major divisions using light measuring or construction lines. Option A is correct because it gives later details a reliable framework. Starting with a dark shadow, final contour or tiny detail can lock in errors before the overall proportion has been checked.

Correct answer: D. Correct relationship between contact shadow and cast shadow

Explanation: The governing concept is grounding through cast-shadow structure. A darker contact shadow shows where the object touches the surface, while the cast shadow extends according to the light direction and helps describe placement. Thus D is correct. A white gap makes the object float, erasing the contour removes useful structure, and darkening only the upper area does not establish contact with the ground.

Correct answer: C. It helps check proportion and placement through the empty shapes between objects

Explanation: Negative space means the shapes formed around and between the main objects. Comparing these empty shapes with the objects helps the artist judge proportion, alignment, spacing, and placement more objectively. Therefore, option C is correct. It is not merely a background-colour choice, does not indicate pencil hardness, and cannot remove shadows; instead, it is an observation tool for improving the whole composition.

Correct answer: A. Checking the drawing from a distance or in a mirror

Explanation: A drawing can look acceptable when viewed too closely because the eye becomes focused on small details. Stepping back reveals the overall silhouette, spacing, balance, and relative sizes; viewing the image in a mirror also reverses familiar visual habits and exposes distortions. Therefore option A is correct. Studying one dark shadow, staying very close, or fixing every line early will not reliably reveal the main proportional error.

Correct answer: B. Lower right

Explanation: The governing concept is the opposite-direction rule for cast shadows: light rays travel from the source toward the object and continue toward the ground, so the shadow extends away from the source. With light above and to the left, the ground shadow will generally project toward the lower right, making option B correct. Option A is the light direction, while C and D do not describe the usual ground shadow.
