मानव भूगोल किसी नगर की महत्ता को केवल जनसंख्या संख्या से नहीं मापता। यदि एक नगर में उच्च स्तर की स्वास्थ्य शिक्षा प्रशासन व्यापार परिवहन और वित्तीय सेवाएँ केंद्रित हों तथा उसका परिवहन नेटवर्क व्यापक हो तो वह समान जनसंख्या वाले दूसरे नगर से बड़ा क्षेत्रीय प्रभाव रख सकता है। केवल अक्षांश या वर्षा यह अंतर नहीं समझाते। परीक्षा में urban hierarchy को population size के साथ functions connectivity और hinterland या service area के संदर्भ में समझना अधिक उचित है। / Human geography does not measure the importance of a city only by population size. A city with advanced healthcare education administration trade transport and financial functions may influence a much larger surrounding region than another city of the same population. Wider transport connections can also strengthen this role. Latitude or rainfall cannot explain the difference. For examinations urban hierarchy should be interpreted through a combination of population functions connectivity and the size of the service area or hinterland linked to the city.
