How can air become saturated even without cooling?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: By adding enough water vapour to it

Direct answer: A is correct. Air is saturated when it contains as much water vapour as it can hold at its current temperature and pressure. Cooling is one way to reach saturation because cooler air generally has a lower capacity for water vapour. However, saturation can also be reached at nearly constant temperature by adding water vapour until the air reaches its limit. For example, evaporation from a wet surface can progressively increase moisture in nearby air. A is correct because adding sufficient vapour raises the actual moisture content to the saturation value. B is wrong because zero pressure is not a normal atmospheric route to saturation. C and D remove moisture, so they move air away from saturation. Memory cue: saturation has two common routes—cool the air or add moisture.
